Well, I’ve covered many of the rumours and scandal concerning Whitney Houston, and her biography, but this talented ebony superstar has a fantastically good side we must not forget.

Whitney Houston Anti-Apartheid Work:

From the start of her career, Whitney was a strong supporter of Nelson Mandela and the anti-apartheid movement.

When  she was a model, the ebony star refused to work with any agencies who did business with the then apartheid-controlled South Africa.

And in  June 1988, in London, Whitney joined other musicians to perform a set at Wembley Stadium to celebrate a then imprisoned Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday.

In 1994, when apartheid in South Africa finally crumbled and Nelson Mandela was voted President, Whitney Houston was invited to perform at a state dinner at the White House honouring Mandela.

And at the end of her world tour, Houston performed three concerts in South Africa to honour President Mandela, playing to over 200,000 people.

Whitney Houston Charity Work:

In 1989,  Whitney Houston set up The Whitney Houston Foundation For Children.  It is a non-profit organization that has raised funds for the needs of children around the world.

The aim of the Foundation is to care for homelessness, children with cancer and AIDS, and to promote other forms of self-empowerment.

Whitney Houston Supporting US Troops:

One of the most memorable moments of 1991 was Whitney Houston performing "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV in January 1991, in honour of US troops fighting the Gulf War. Whitney’s recording of the song was released as a single and it reached the Top 20 on the US Hot 100.

Others have tried to make pop records out of the star Spangled Banner, but only Whitney Houston  turned it into a massive hit.

Later in 1991, Whitney Houston put on a  ‘Welcome Home Heroes’ concert for the soldiers fighting in the Gulf War and their families.

The free concert took place at the Norfolk Air Force Base in Norfolk, Virginia in front of 3,500 serviceman and women and was then broadcast free by HBO, across the nation.

Whitney Houston Paved The Way For Other Black Female Artists:

In the 1980s, although black male artists were beginning to be represented on the up and coming TV music channel, MTV, it was not until Whitney Houston’s music videos were played on the channel, that a black female artist was given regular air time.

After the breakthrough of Whitney’s records, other ebony female singers made the MTV list.  these included Janet Jackson and Anita Baker.

And black female artists began to be represented more on radio stations also.  They were no more to be disregarded.

When MTV’s rival, VH1, came into force, the path had been strengthened for black female singers of all rock/pop/R&B and Soul genres to receive substantial airplay.

Many ebony female singers have recognized Whitney’s influence in making their own music careers more successful.

Mary J. Blige has stated that that when Whitney Houston invited her onstage during VH1’s Divas Live show in 1999, this “opened doors for her”.

World famous ebony artist Mariah Carey, says Whitney was a huge influence on her work; Britain’s Leona Lewis is quoted as saying she idolised Whitney when she was child; and Beyonce and Alicia Keys have both said that Whitney Houston was an inspiration to them.

Whitney Houston Latest News:

Considering the ‘ups and downs’ of previous years, there was much speculation about Whitney Houston’s latest album, ‘I Look To You’.  And the scandal reared its ugly head straight away.

It has been proposed that, in order to cash in on the speculation with the publication of his auto-biography, in July 2009, Whitney’s former husband Bobby Brown emerged to blame her singer for his drug addiction.  He was quoted in the Daily Star as saying:

“I never used cocaine until after I met Whitney. Before then, I had experimented with other drugs but marijuana was my drug of choice.”

Whitney’s new album was finally released on August 2009 and, in most cases, Brown’s allegations were forgotten (at least for a while…).

The results for I Look To You were extremely positive. 

The album entered the Billboard 200 at number one, making it Whitney’s first number one album since ‘The Bodyguard’.

A much more positive Whitney Houston appeared on Television to promote her new album.  She gave a long-awaited interview to Oprah Winfrey.  The show achieved massive audiences.

Following her new promotional work on TV,Whitney appeared and performed the first single from her album on Television stations all over Europe.

In the UK, her performance on The X Factor received some criticism (and pictures of a ‘wardrobe malfunction’), but it didn’t stop Whitney’s single reaching number five in the UK record charts.

Whitney Houston received much more positive reviews in Germany, Italy and France.

Whitney has stated she will begin her international ‘I Look At You’ tour in April 2010 in the UK, which is eagerly awaited.

But despite all the (mainly) positive feedback, ‘I Look at You’ has not been nominated for any Grammy awards as was expected by many of her fans.

And Whitney Houston’s new energy in promoting her career goes on.

She featured on the January 2010 cover of InStyle, and the interview with Whitney talks about how she feels performing live again, being a ’sex symbol’ at the age of 46, Whitney’s relationship with her 16-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina (rumoured recently in the gossip press of trying to commit suicide), and discusses hopes of a possible return to the film studios.

The front cover of  InStyle shows Whitney Houston looking happy and healthy (even though the image looks ‘photo-shopped’).

And this is a great relief to her millions of fans.

Nevertheless, as always, there are certain sections of the celebrity press who are just waiting for Whitney Houston to fall.

It was reported by numerous sources that, ‘those close to her say the pressure of coming back have inched her closer to going back to her old habits…’  and it seems that the report was made with anticipation, rather than remorse.

In early January 2010, the National Enquirer, (no comment…) reported that Whitney Houston could soon be back on drugs, owing to the pressures of recent commitments.  The report speculated…

“She is still drinking and with Whitney, alcohol and drugs have always gone hand-in-hand. She’s worked so hard to get back on top. It would be tragic for it to go up in smoke because she can’t stay clean.”

Angry commentators argued that there was no evidence that Whitney had relapsed, nor could it be stated that she was going to, just because that is how her life went before.

Whitney Houston has recently presented herself, wherever she has appeared, with poise and confidence. She has found the strength to challenge all her problems.

And we should be very supportive of her for that.

The gossip press really shouldn’t be constantly trying to tear Whitney down.  They should be helping this multi-talented, extremely successful and influential black female artist to continue with her success.

Of course, then the celebrity press wouldn’t have anything to gossip about…

Most of the scandals about Whitney Houston which appeared in the media were related to her relationship with the rap artist, Bobby Brown, and the ongoing allegations of drug abuse.

So let’s re-cap on those events:

Whitney Houston Relationships:

In the 1980s, Whitney Houston was romantically linked in the gossip press to American football star Randall Cunningham and also actor and comedian Eddie Murphy, who she dated for a short time.

But it was when Whitney met rap singer Bobby Brown in 1989 that things began to change and Whitney Houston was no longer the ‘angel’ of the gossip columns.  In fact, she was almost demonised.

After an on-and-off, widely publicised three year courtship, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown were married on July 18, 1992.

The following year, Whitney gave birth to her first and only child -  daughter Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown (who was also to cause controversy later).

But it was reported that Whitney’s relationship with Brown was already in turmoil.

And this was not helped by  Brown’s frequent ‘problems with the law’ and his subsequent jail time.

Nevertheless, the couple remained together, and in 2005 they appeared together in Brown’s Reality TV show, ‘Being Bobby Brown’.

That reality show was not a good vehicle to show Whitney Houston at her best.

Many said it showed Whitney at her lowest moments.  And the effects of her rumoured substance abuse were often stated as the culprit.

The show never made a second season…

Whether her relationship with Brown was at fault for what appeared to be Whitney Houston’s demise, only she can truthfully say, but her marriage to Brown finally ended in divorce, in February 2007.

Even then the turmoil wasn’t over, as Brown subsequently filed for a change in custody terms and support. 

However, with the overruling of Brown’s appeal in April 2007, Whitney was on course to get her life back together in full.

But the allegations of drub abuse remained….

Whitney Houston And Drug Allegations:

When she began her phenomenal career, Whitney Houston appeared as a ‘good girl’.  She was clean living and the type of ebony female star moms wanted their daughters to look up to.

But all that was subsequently to change…

By the late 1990s reports were circulating that Whitney’s behaviour had altered radically.

Whitney was often late for interviews, rehearsals and even performances.  She began cancelling concerts and TV appearances.

She had also lost a lot of weight.

Rumours had already been circulating that Whitney was doing drugs with her husband, Bobby Brown and they now became rife. 

Especially after airport security guards found marijuana in their luggage and charges were later brought against the couple.

The charges were subsequently dropped.

But it didn’t help matters when, in a 2002 interview with Diane Sawyer, Whitney claimed …

”I make too much money to ever do crack”

whilst admitting that she did take various (unnamed) substances.

It was not until an interview on the Oprah Winfrey show, in 2009, that Whitney Houston admitted she had used drugs when she was with Brown.

And by that time she was saying she was clean.

Let’s hope so!

Whitney Houston was born Whitney Elizabeth Houston on August 9, 1963.  And if anyone hasn’t heard about Whitney…where the hell have you been?

There is so much information on the internet for Whitney Houston, I have had to make three separate posts so that I could give you as much bio, gossip and news as I could.

And as more news on Whitney Houston surfaces in the press, these three pages on Whitney Houston will be only the beginning!

Whitney Houston Biography And Background Information:

Whitney Houston is an ebony American female singer, actress, former fashion model, and one of the biggest female stars to grace the record books and the celebrity gossip columns!

In 2009, Rolling Stone listed Witney Houston as one of the 100 greatest singers of the rock era.

But, as well as all her many claims to fame, Whitney Houston has also had her problems.

Her rise to fame, her successes, and some of those ‘problems’ are chronicled here and on the next two pages:

Whitney Houston was born into a family which was to become famous on the Black Music, R&B, and Soul scene. 

All very powerful female singers, they were all to become well known as international stars.

Whitney’s mother is singer Cissy Houston, her cousins are Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick and her godmother is Aretha Franklin.

With that musical background, Whitney Houston was almost destined to be one of the greats.

Whitney first started singing at her New Jersey church as a member of a junior gospel choir at age eleven. 

And she was soon performing with her mother, Cissy, in New York night clubs.

It was only a matter of time before Whitney was discovered by the man who was to become her long time friend and colleague, Clive Davis, of Arista Records. 

And that was the real beginning of history being made.

Whitney’s debut album ‘Whitney Houston’ was released in 1985. 

It was to become the best-selling debut album by a female artist at the time.

Her second album ‘Whitney’ was released in 1987, and it became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Whitney, was soon extending her fame as an actress. 

And to make the ‘cross-over’ from film to disc, she also released albums of the films’ soundtracks.

Whitney Houston Actress and Movie Star:

In 1992, Whitney Houston appeared in her first starring role in the film The Bodyguard, starring alongside actor Kevin Costner.

The same year, the film’s original soundtrack, featuring Whitney, won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. And its lead single, ‘I Will Always Love You’, became one of the best-selling singles in music history.

The film itself had mixed reviews, and Whitney Houston’s performance was often described as ‘wooden’, or, ‘just being Whitney’, but the film was an outstanding commercial success for its time.

The Bodyguard grossed more than $121 million in the United States and $410 million worldwide, making it one of the top 100 grossing films domestically at its time of release.

Whitney Houston went on to star in a number of successful (and sometimes less successful) films, including, Waiting to Exhale (1995), The Preacher’s Wife (1996) and Nora’s Hair Salon (2004).

From a less-observant viewpoint, there appeared to be no stopping Whitney in her tracks in achieving all-round, long-term success in music and acting.

Early pictures of Whitney Houston show a very happy and content young woman. 

She is truly beautiful in her self-confidence.

They had begun whilst Whitney was making her early films, and were destined to get worse.

Furthermore, over that same time, Whitney Houston’s music career, although still successful in  most people’s terms, was taking a a bit of a nose dive.

And many said both of these ‘issues’ were down to her relationship with the singer, Bobby Brown and her use of drugs..

Singing sensation Leona Lewis was born on 3 April 1985 in the London Borough of Islington. 

She is an extremely successful British pop and R&B singer–songwriter.

After earlier unsuccessful attempts to become a singer, the former pizza waitress was persuaded by her long-term boyfriend to enter the British Television series The X Factor.

And Leona made TV and recording history.

On 16 December 2006 Leona Lewis became the winner of the third series of The X Factor.

And her meteoric rise to fame and celebrity status began in earnest.

Leona Lewis Recording Artist:

Since that time, Leona Lewis has become a multi-platinum selling artist and three time Grammy Award nominee.

Her debut single "A Moment Like This" became the fastest selling UK single after being downloaded over 50,000 times within thirty minutes of its release.

Her second single, "Bleeding Love", reached number one position in over thirty singles charts around the world.

Leona Lewis And PETA:

Leona Lewis is also a vegetarian, an animal lover and a keen horse rider.

She won PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian along with Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis in 2008, and in 2009 with actor Scott Maslen.

It was no contest when PETA chose her as their Person Of The Year for 2008.

Leona Lewis follows up her love of animals by being a supporter of the World Society for the Protection of Animals.

And she showed her convictions when turning down a massive $1 million offer to open the Harrods sale, because the department store stocks fur.

Leona Lewis And The Gossip Columns:

Leona Lewis has remained under the celebrity media spotlight ever since her early days on the X Factor, which is not surprising, given her talent and looks.

All the celeb gossip columns and popular papers tried to find some scandal on Leona,  so she easily made front page news on 14th October 2009.

Leona Lewis Gets Attacked:

However, this wasn’t a sex scandal, but an attack on Leona Lewis by a stalker.

Leona was at a book signing for her auto-biography, ‘Dreams’ at the Piccadilly branch of Waterstone’s book store in central London,

But suddenly all hell broke loose as a man appeared from the crowd and punched Leona hard in the head. Her attacker was Peter Kowalczyk, a 29-year-old south London man.

Running away, holding her head, Leona Lewis was obviously hurt and in pain.  She had to have emergency hospital treatment and cancelled several engagements over the following few days.

It was later reported that her attacker had a history of mental health problems.  It was suggested that he may have been stalking Leona and attacked her because he was jealous of her winning The X Factor. 

Evidently Leona’s attacker had entered the contest himself, but had been rejected by the show’s producers. He was detained under the mental health act for an indeterminate period.

Not a newspaper to shy away from a sensational front page story, the British ‘Sun’ newspaper had its own discussion of  ‘why Leona Lewis recovered so quickly from her attack’.

They reported that ‘it is all down to her tough upbringing’.

Evidently, in an exclusive interview with The Sun, the ebony singer explained that growing up in a rough part of East London had prepared her for anything.

"I’m from Hackney, so I’m hard. I’m not going to let something like that bother me.”

Well, I always thought Leona Lewis was born in Islington…

But whatever you make of The Sun’s interview (and let’s face it, they are a newspaper who will look for celebrity gossip, even when there isn’t any),…it is certainly true that Leona Lewis has strength and resourcefulness.

Otherwise there is no way the former pizza waitress would have become the massive star she is today.

Of course, what many people are waiting for is some really juicy gossip on Leona Lewis, and the press and paparazzi are always looking out for something ‘scandalous’ to report.  But they are finding it difficult., because so far she is being a good girl.

Leona is sticking with her long-term boyfriend, attending all the awards without a hitch…and she is belting out songs like the fantastic female artist she is.

What more could you ask for….?

This beautiful ebony R&B singer is sexy enough without all the scandal.  Don’t you think….?

Lil’ Kim was born in July 1975, with the quite ordinary name of Kimberly Denise Jones, but there is nothing ordinary about Lil’ Kim.

Known also as the Queen Bee, this powerful ebony lady really lives up to her claimed status.

Lil’ Kim is a black female rap artist who, right from the start, knew just how to make the gossip columns, as well as win a place of esteem in the urban music scene.

When she rose to fame in the late 1990s, her explicit (some would say ‘XXX’ lyrics) rocked the female music scene.

Black male rappers were known to have lyrics full of sexual expletives, but for a female rapper to do this, and often better, was an experience to shock your granny, if she ever ventured to listen to Lil’ Kim!

Add to this that Lil’ Kim’s boyfriend was the (now) late rapper, Notorious B.I.G, she was often on the front page of urban mags and their lifestyle was discussed constantly in the gossip sections of music radio.

And not to be overshadowed for one moment by others trying to take her throne, Lil’ Kim wore stage outfits which were extremely revealing and seductive.

She even wore the sexy outfits to most of her personal, TV and magazine appearances as well.

In later years, Lil’ Kim has become somewhat notorious for her (some would say) ‘addiction’ to plastic surgery. 

Her already pretty face and sexy body have had constant ‘enhancements’ of one type or another. 

Even her face has been altered with cheek implants,  which I, for one, think she really doesn’t need.

But, despite all of Lil’ Kim’s ‘in your face’ activity, it was something else which made her really notorious all over the celebrity gossip columns.

Lil’ Kim’s Prison Sentence:

On July 26th 2005, Lil’ Kim was given a year and a day prison sentence for three counts of perjury and one count of conspiracy, for which she had been convicted in March that same year.

This was over a shootout which took place in February 2001 outside the offices of radio station WQHT-FM (Hot 97) .

As  Kim and her entourage were leaving, Capone, of rap duo Capone-N-Noreaga, and his companions were arriving. 

It was not a pleasant meeting.  And it was to have disastrous results for Lil’ Kim.

Suif Jackson, Lil’ Kim’s bodyguard, shot one man in the back during the altercation which followed.

When questioned by police, and later by the Grand Jury, Lil’ Kim denied that her former co-manager, Damion Butler, was with her and her entourage at the time of the incident. 

Kim also claimed she couldn’t ID a photo of another man believed to be involved. 

That man was proven, by security cam footage and later evidence, to be Suif Jackson.

Both Butler and Jackson later confessed to firing on Capone and his companions and pleaded guilty to gun charges as part of a plea bargain.

This put Lil’ Kim in a very awkward position.

Shown to have lied to the Grand Jury, she had to plead guilty to perjury and the conspiracy count. 

Luckily for Kim, a more serious charge of obstruction was dropped.

Nevertheless, she had still faced the possibility of a twenty year prison term, so the year and a day sentence was a great relief to Lil’ Kim and to her many fans.

The media pushed constantly for news of Lil’ Kim in prison, but, apart from speculation, the main reports were that Kim was ‘doing her time’ peacefully.

After her release, Kim said that she had spent many days drawing in a ‘Bratz’ colouring book and, when she could, she watched  ABC’s ‘Dancing With The Stars’. 

Not quite the behaviour expected of this ‘in your face’ female rapper!

Lil’ Kim was released early from prison. 

After doing ten months of her 366 day sentence, Kim walked free from Philadelphia Federal Detention Center on Monday July 3, 2006. 

According to reports, Lil’ Kim looked ’surprisingly glamorous’ after her time behind bars.  Wearing sunglasses and dressed in a low-cut white outfit, Kim carried a balloon and bouquet of white roses, and waved and blew kisses to dozens of fans, who had stayed up all night to see Lil’ Kim, having heard rumours of her early release.

Kim was then escorted away, Queen Bee style, in a silver Rolls Royce, to remain under house arrest for 30 days and be on probation for three more years.

And to her credit, Lil’ Kim has a sense of humour which can bring her great publicity, even out of her bad times.

At the September 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, Lil’ Kim made a triumphant return to the stage.  the audience gasped when she appeared, wearing an orange ‘prison jumpsuit’ and flanked by fake prison guards.

Telling the cheering audience, ”The girl is back,” the Queen Bee peeled off the mock prison jumpsuit to reveal a glamorous black and gold pantsuit.

She then presented British singer/songwriter James Blunt with an award for best male music video for ‘You’re Beautiful’. He looked terrified!

And Lil’ Kim’s time in prison provided another treat for her fans.

Lil’ Kim On Dancing with the Stars:

Having developed a love for the TV show, ‘Dancing With The Stars’, Kim jumped at the chance to appear on the program.

R&B fans who had never even heard of the family-viewing program tuned in to watch Lil’ Kim! 

And the girl was good too. 

As she should be, for someone who has been giving her all, dancing on music videos, since she began in the business.

There was an ‘unfortunate incident’ when Kim had a ‘wardrobe malfunction’,  but that made the viewing all the more enjoyable

Lil’ Kim’s Prison Biography:

In May 2009, Kim told OK magazine that she would tell all about her life behind bars in her book, ‘The Price Of Loyalty’. The book was released on 30th October, 2009, and, to quote Lil’ Kim:

“You don’t think about things until it [prison] happens to you. The book is going to give people who have been in those situations a bright outlook on life."

Lil’ Kim Right Now:
